What we've done already.
The launch of the ELEPHANT HAPPY HOUR activity (EHH), in November 2017 was one of our first initiatives , making SU4E the only organization in the area to offer an ethical and sustainable option for an elephant activity in the Chitwan district. Each Elephant Happy Hour granted a working elephant a rare 1 hour respite from carrying tourists on its back. It represented a real break for the elephants, free of saddle, riding tourists and commands; an hour during which they could simply graze freely in the forest, bath or scratch, while guests observe from a distance and enjoy their moment of peace. This activity was met with success early, thus providing increasingly more “breaks” in the days of working elephants. In the first half of 2019, the number of Elephant Happy Hours doubled from the same time the previous year, resulting in over 250 Elephant Happy Hours in total and remains the #1 ranked outdoor activity on TripAdvisor for Chitwan.
Actions for 2021.
While our Elephant Happy Hour program is complete, SU4E will continue demonstrating to elephant owners that operating ethical activities with elephants is possible.
SU4E will provide any assistance necessary to help owners interested in starting an "Elephant Happy Hour" type of activity for themselves.
